today is the women’s march on washington, and quite a few of my friends and acquaintances are in dc marching for equality. i am so proud of all of them for taking action to stand up for what they believe in. may the day be filled with peace and solidarity.
we are cuddled up at home playing board games and drinking tea. i am using a quiet moment to reflect on all the women, mothers, and female influences in my life. i am grateful for all the strong women i have known, been raised by, and admired from afar.
sarah connor from the terminator series is one of the first women that came to mind when i was thinking about fictional female heros. there is something about her i love so much. first of all, she’s a badass who raises the savior of humanity. i adore that she was a prominent female lead in a 1980’s macho man action film – she screams feminist warrior. but what i really love about sarah is that she puts all of her personal junk aside and completely commits herself to a meaningful cause (saving the human race, nbd).
in this uncomfortable and uncertain time, it is easy to feel disempowered and like the world’s problems are too big for any one person to make a difference. i think the women’s march is proof that it doesn’t have to be this way. we can put aside all our personal junk (biases, judgments, assumptions, habits) and unite to do something powerful and meaningful. at least that’s the spirit i want to live with for the next 4 years.
